‘Amour et Foy’: Songs of Love and Songs of Faith
Sacred and secular music from 15th and 16th century France and England
by Janequin, Lassus, Sermissy, Dunstable, Wilby, Cornish
The 1607 Ensemble combines virtuosic repertoire from the late Renaissance and early Baroque with vocal jazz and, using elements of both styles, the singers create their own settings of old texts. Their programme focuses on the Renaissance but begins with music from 13th century Orkney and ends in more modern popular style.
Three of the ensemble come from North America – including New Brunswick’s only professional counter-tenor! – and bring a fresh sound to music that we are more accustomed to hearing performed in the English choral style. The double bellcot of St John’s is an unusual feature in Lincolnshire. The nave has arcading in late Norman style and the chancel was built on medieval foundations in the 1930s.
