Sir Joseph Banks' Lincolnshire Legacy

Professor Libby John- Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Science and EngineeringUniversity of Lincoln 21ST CENTURY BOTANICAL REVIVAL - Keynote Talk 250 years ago, the passionate young plant-hunter, Joseph Banks, embarked on his seminal scientific adventures. He returned a celebrity with 30,000 plant specimens and used his influence to promote the importance of plants to society. Plants are still fundamental to our current and future existence. More than ever we need to embrace and understand the wonderful diversity of plants that we share this planet with. They are the basis of the food we eat, many medicines, and provide the habitats and ecosystems we love and depend on. In a time of growing human population and changing environments we need to build on Banks’ legacy to create the passionate botanists of the future.
