Nelson Mass - Grantham Choral Society

Nelson Mass - Grantham Choral Society

 Grantham Choral Society’s summer concert!

For Grantham Choral Society’s summer concert, Musical Director David Humphreys has selected a trio of eighteenth century choral works.

Haydn’s Nelson Mass is one of his masterpieces. He wrote it during the final stages of the Napoleonic Wars and subtitled it a ‘Mass for troubled times’, which makes it feel especially relevant for 2026.

Michael Haydn was Joseph’s younger and often overlooked brother, yet was an accomplished composer in his own right. We will introduce you to his beautiful Dixit Dominus, a setting of Psalm 110, which is sure to become a new favourite.

Zadok the Priest needs little introduction. Handel wrote it for the coronation of George II in 1727, and it has been sung at the coronation of every British monarch since and is a firm favourite in the choral repertoire.

Our programme is completed by Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, a perennially popular work for orchestra and voices.

We’re delighted to be accompanied by four talented soloists studying at the Royal College of Music and by the Helix Ensemble.

GCS has reached high standards under its current Director of Music. So come and join us for a celebration of song in the beautiful setting of St Wulfram’s Church.
