PERIODIC TABLE OF VIDEOS

DR DARREN WALSH

ANGEL AND ROYAL, KINGS ROOM (UPSTAIRS)

In this lecture, Darren describes how collaboration between several members of the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham and video journalist Brady Haran led to the creation of the Periodic Table of Videos YouTube channel. This began as a collection of videos, one for each of the 118 elements of the Periodic Table and quickly gathered momentum and, as well as containing videos describing the chemistry of each of the elements, it now contains videos describing interesting molecules and chemical reactions. The channel now has 750, 000 YouTube subscribers and a total of more than 124 million views in over 200 countries.

In this lecture, Darren will explain how the concept has developed over its 8 year history, suggest tentatively how the channel came to be successful, and do a few live demonstrations of some of The Periodic Table of Videos' most famous chemical reactions.
