Britten Quartet no.2 in C op.36

Already enjoying an international career, with concert tours in the US, China, Columbia and Europe as well as regular appearances at major UK festivals and London’s Wigmore Hall, the Castalian Quartet recently received two prestigious awards for further development. Janacek’s quartet was inspired by Tolstoy’s story of the same name and also references Beethoven’s violin sonata. Deeply influenced by the music of Purcell, Britten’s quartet is richly original and melodic. The church, with an unusual dedication, overlooks fenland beside the Roman Carr Dyke. This position and its solid Saxon tower suggest that it may have been built as a fortress as well as a sanctuary. A Norman doorway leads to the nave of predominantly the same period. The rood-loft stairs and doorway are still present, and chantry chapels at each side of the 13th-century chancel have hagioscopes looking towards the eastern altar.
