Nell Gwynn is an actress when it's new and scandalous to be one. Starting out as an illiterate orange seller, Nell pulls in the crowds with her lively wit and talent, and is soon elevated from back-alley squalor to the lusty court - and bedchamber - of King Charles II. But it isn't a smooth climb to the top, and she takes on professional, political and romantic rivals along the way.
