In 1827 Robert Brown, protegé of of the great naturalist Sir Joseph Banks, made a strange discovery. While trying to understand how plants have sex, he found pollen particles dancing around as if alive. Brown#s discovery left scientists baffled for almost a century, and would take the great Albert Einstein to explain. Physicist and festival co-curator Dr Harry Cliff relates the seldom-told story of Robert Brown, his jiggling pollen particles and how Einstein showed that Brown#s flower held the secret to the existence of atoms.
