Is this the original Barbie you may ask? Dame Barbara Cartland, the world-famous romantic novelist, always dressed in glorious pink, is central to this funny and poignant play.
The rather witty Dame Barbara, appears in all her splendour, insisting that readers want to hear about virgins, passionate highwaymen, scenes in stables and three-foot fountains!! Irene has been encouraged by her daughter to write a memory book and Dame Brabara is convinced that Irene “has a great story to tell. Ring it out of your heart and onto the paper!” As Irene’s reality begins to blur, she gradually reveals her long-kept family secrets to Dame Barbara, (who is only seen by Irene and the audience.)
Irene’s daughters and granddaughter see things rather differently as they experience their mum and nan losing her grip on life and slipping away, due to dementia. An all too familiar scenario, as the family lose their mum in spirit, but not in body.
St Peter’s Hill Players trust that their production presents this complex subject with honesty and integrity. They are delighted to be able to raise awareness and funds for the Grantham Dementia Café and the Alzheimer’s Society.
This amateur production is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, a Concord Theatricals Company.
