NATURAL FLIGHT
DR RICHARD J. BOMPHREY
ANGEL AND ROYAL HOTEL (KINGS ROOM, UPSTAIRS)
To lift off and become airborne, flying animals have to conquer gravity. They do so by flapping their wings and pushing on the air. Insects are the most diverse order of animals on earth and they often use sophisticated aerodynamic tricks that Isaac Newton would have appreciated because they can be explained using his laws of motion. Can humans learn from insects when building our own flying machines? Come and find out how flies fly! Richard is a reader in biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College and an expert on insect flight. He read biological sciences at the University of Exeter followed by a DPhil (PhD) in biomechanics at the University of Oxford and was brought up in Grantham, attending the Kings School.
